Dr Amnon H. Eden is a computer scientist and the Principal Scientist of Sapience.org, the thinktank for disruptive and intelligent computing, and the founder of Moneta Sapiens. His work spans software design and architecture (since 1994), artificial intelligence (since 1992), and blockchain technology (since 2006).
Artificial intelligence and AI safety
Dr Eden edited Singularity Hypotheses: A Scientific and Philosophical Assessment (Springer, 2013), the first peer-reviewed comprehensive volume on superintelligence, with Johnny H. Søraker, James H. Moor and Eric Steinhart. It set out the arguments for and against a technological singularity, each answered by a critical response, and remains a standard reference.
His technical report The Singularity Controversy, Part I (arXiv:1601.05977) separates the arguments of merit from the fallacies that confuse the debate, and defines the term in three parts — superintelligence, acceleration and discontinuity. The position running through this work is a simple one: you cannot govern what you have not defined.
Software architecture and design
Dr Eden is the author of Codecharts: Roadmaps and Blueprints for Object-Oriented Programs (Wiley), and wrote the entry on the Philosophy of Computer Science in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. His research has appeared in leading venues, including an award-winning paper in the ACM/IEEE Automated Software Engineering series. Further contributions concern design patterns, formal methods, object-oriented programming, development tools, software evolution, software modelling and visualisation, and software security.
Practice
Dr Eden gained his professional expertise as a programmer — in fourteen languages — as a team leader, as Director of Technology at Encrypgen LLC, a blockchain start-up, and most recently as founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Moneta Sapiens. He lectured at the University of Essex from 2002 to 2015.
Education
Dr Eden graduated from the Interdisciplinary Program for Outstanding Students at Tel Aviv University, where he was awarded a master’s degree cum laude in computer science (machine learning) in 1994 and a doctorate in computer science (software engineering) in 2000.
